What’s “Satoyama”?

“Satoyama” is the Japanese word to describe a village or populated place located near a mountainous woodland area. The word “satoyama” consists of two parts: “sato” means the populated area and “yama” means the mountainous areas. In Japan, people and nature have been coexisting on the border between the populated “sato” and the undeveloped nature of “yama” for many years. People living in these “satoyama” have become part of the ecosystem and developed a sustainable lifestyle by maintaining the forests and farmlands of the area. There is a “Satoyama” located in the suburbs of Kanazawa. We will tour this area by bicycle and discover the hidden treasures of “satoyama”.
